12 Best Sex Positions for Female Orgasm (With Illustrations and Tips)

When asked what triggers women's orgasm, many men might be a little lost for an answer. Much of what men learn about sex comes from pornography, and the frantic, powerful in-and-out thrusting they most often see is fairly unlikely to bring about the satisfaction their partners crave.

What you need to know about the female orgasm

There are three areas that boost a woman's chance of orgasm: her mind, her clitoris, and her G-spot.

Making love to her mind:

Many women struggle to remain focused during sex or even get in the mood, given the daily distractions of working, running a home and family, and everything else that happens during their busy lives.

To achieve orgasm, women need to feel relaxed and to achieve a certain level of intimacy.

By helping her forget about those distractions, making her feel important, valued, and loved, and finding ways of lowering her inhibitions, she can relax into what feels good, enhancing her pleasure.

A long-term Finish study published in the Socioaffective Neuroscience & Psychology journal investigated Determinants of Female Sexual Orgasms and showed that the key to more frequent orgasms lay in mental and relationship factors.

These factors and capacities included orgasm importance, sexual desire, sexual self-esteem, and openness of sexual communication with partners.

The results of the study also showed:

A relationship that felt good and worked well emotionally, and where sex was approached openly and appreciatively, promoted orgasms.

With this, a crucial factor for men to help women orgasm is open communication.

Understanding what their partner wants and needs to relax, to be comfortable enough to climax, and to know what kind of stimulation and sex positions are her favorites and most likely to help her orgasm is a must.

Another factor showing the importance of emotional connection to women's orgasm was found during this study, Kamasutra in Practice: The Use of Sexual Positions in the Czech Population and Their Association With Female Coital Orgasm Potential, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

We found that a higher proportion of female coital orgasms are positively associated with the frequency of use of face to face/female above and sitting/face-to-face positions. Again, this closeness through intimacy, both physical and emotional, proved to be an important factor for achieving a female orgasm.

Paying attention to the clitoris:

Moving on to the physical aspects of the female orgasm revolves around the most sexually sensitive area—for most women, the clitoris. When aroused, blood flow engorges the clitoris, making it more sensitive and increasing the chance of a female orgasm. The clitoris is located under the clitoral hood where the labia meets the top of the vulva and below the pubic bone—around an inch from the vaginal opening.

Many studies estimate the amount of women who orgasm during intercourse, during intercourse with clitoral stimulation, and by clitoral stimulation alone. This one, Women's Experiences With Genital Touching, Sexual Pleasure, and Orgasm, from the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, found:

  • 18.4% of (US) women reported intercourse alone was sufficient for orgasm.
  • 36.6% reported clitoral stimulation was necessary for orgasm during intercourse.
  • An additional 36% reported that while clitoral stimulation wasn't necessary for orgasm during intercourse, their orgasms felt better if the clitoris was stimulated during intercourse.

As you'll see, many of our 'best sex positions for female orgasm' introduce ways to create and deliver direct contact to the clitoris, whether it's part of your sex play with a long-term partner or for one sexual encounter.

Creating contact with the G-spot:

The G-spot is located two or three inches inside the vaginal canal, on the front vaginal wall. It's the internal portion of the clitoral organ, so if you hook your finger inside, it's behind where her urethra is on the outside.

More scientific research, this time a study from the Journal of Sexual Medicine, The Clitoral Complex: A Dynamic Sonographic Study, showed the connection between the G-spot and clitoris and the vaginal orgasm.

We suggest that the special sensitivity of the lower anterior vaginal wall could be explained by pressure and movement of clitoris' root during a vaginal penetration and subsequent perineal contraction.

The G-spot could be explained by the richly innervated clitoris.

Given its position, straight in-and-out thrusting is going to slide straight past all those essential nerves, so sex positions that encourage a different angle of entry, one where the penis rubs and pushes along the top of the vaginal wall, are much more likely to deliver the stimulation your partner needs.

With those factors in mind, here are our suggestions for the best sex positions for female orgasms.

1. The CAT position

Illustration of the CAT Position Sex Position

How
: At first glance, CAT (coital alignment technique) can easily be confused with the Missionary position, but the difference is that the male (or the penetrating partner on top) moves higher up so the penis shaft and pubic bone rub against the clitoris. Contact is more of a rocking and grinding motion than thrusting in and out. Closing her legs will create a tighter fit and add pressure and friction.

Putting a pillow beneath the small of the woman's back will raise and tilt her pelvis to create a good angle to grind the clitoris as well as hit her G-spot. Lifting her legs over your shoulders—or a single shoulder for a nice tight fit—will amplify the angle of attack. Alternating between clitoris and G-spot stimulation could help her experience more sensations and, hopefully, a great orgasm.

2. Woman on the edge of the bed with her partner standing

How
: The woman lies on her back, on the edge of the bed. The penetrating partner can hold her ankles, or she can rest her feet over his shoulders. This does two things: first, it allows her to be completely relaxed, and second, it provides access for deep penetration.

Taking edge-of-the-bed sex to the next level

If she's explored her best orgasms through masturbation, she has open access to her clitoris or can guide your hands and fingers to teach you what she needs. Introducing vibrators and sex toys won't just help boost sensation but will look incredibly sexy, too.

3. Spooning

How
: Both partners lay on their sides facing the same direction, with the man entering her from behind. The key component is how accessible the woman's breasts, thighs, and clitoris are to both partners, and her neck and ears are available for nibbling and nuzzling.

Taking spooning sex to the next level

Encouraging her to touch herself or to guide your hands in the ways she likes creates an ideal teaching opportunity. Spooning allows her to lose herself by being the full focus of your attention while ensuring the touches she receives maximize her chances of climax.

4. Woman facing down, man on top

How
: The woman lays face down on the bed with a pillow beneath her groin, raising her behind. With her butt raised at this angle and with a little guidance, penetration from behind strikes and rubs the G-spot from an angle that may deliver new and different sensations.

Taking face-down sex to the next level

With the woman face-down flat against the bed, you can take this position to the next level simply by putting a vibrator or other sex toy between her and the bed, adding constant stimulation to the clitoris and inner thighs.

5. Woman on her back, legs up

How
: This position is like Missionary but with her legs raised and rested over your shoulders and her thighs against her chest. This is another position that allows for deep penetration, allowing her to feel fuller while maintaining one of our most close-contact face-to-face positions.

Taking high-legs sex to the next level

Dropping one leg still permits deep penetration but provides more access to the clitoris for the addition of fingers, thumbs, and toys for even more pleasure.

6. Cowgirl

Illustration of the Cowgirl Sex Position

How
: Cowgirl is a favorite position for plenty of women. With the penetrating partner laid on their back, the woman takes complete control of the action by going on top. It's another of our face-to-face positions. She can rest on her knees or squat above her partner, depending on her preference for comfort, control, and performance.

She can control the angle and depth of penetration and the speed of the thrust. If she leans back, she can guide the penis toward her G-spot and experience a different angle of contact.

Taking Cowgirl to the next level

Place your flat hand around your penis, with two fingers on either side of the shaft. This gives your partner something harder and more uneven to rub and grind against as they ride you. With your other hand, if there's enough room, massage her clitoris to double on those sensitive areas or encourage her to masturbate herself to her most explosive climax.

7. Seesaw position

Illustration of the Seesaw position Sex Position

How
: The Seesaw is a cross between Cowgirl and the Lotus. The male (or penetrating partner) sits upright with his partner sitting on the floor between his legs with her legs around his waist. Once his penis is inside her, she can raise, rock, or grind herself against him, allowing her full control of the action.

Taking the Seesaw to the next level

Encourage your partner to lie further back. This will change the angle of attack of the penis and create an angle far more likely to rub against her G-spot.

8. Lotus

Illustration of the Lotus Sex Position

How
: The man sits cross-legged with his partner sitting in his lap, legs wrapped around his waist. This is a very intimate position due to the closeness of such face-to-face positions. It's the ultimate slow-burning, rocking, and grinding sex position.

Taking the Lotus to the next level

Wear a vibrating penis ring. With your partner's body weight on your lap, the solid contact will send vibrations exactly and intensely where they're meant to be.

9. Missionary Position

Illustration of the Missionary Sex Position

How
: The standard sex position. However, while men tend to prefer straight in-and-out thrusting, there are many variations to work through to explore different coital positions, angles of alignment, motion techniques, and all the ways you can help your partner reach orgasm. Open and closed legs raised pelvis, knees high, and it's the easiest position from which to access CAT.

Taking Missionary to the next level

Missionary is another excellent position for adding a penis ring to your sex play. A vibrating penis ring (or cockring) slides over the base of the penis and has a vibrating bullet perfectly positioned to stimulate the clitoris. You might need to experiment with your partner to find the best position for contact, but once you're there, it should add an extra dimension to this standard sex position.

10. Reverse Cowgirl

Illustration of the Reverse cowgirl Sex Position

How
: Just like Cowgirl but with your partner facing away from you. The advantage is that the angle of attack of the penis is aimed directly at the front vaginal wall, where all those G-spot nerve endings are.

Taking Reverse Cowgirl to the next level

Instead of straddling both legs as she rides you, have her straddle just one. If you raise the knee of the leg she's straddling, with your foot placed flat on the bed, she can use it to grind against, with direct contact to the clitoris and exactly as hard as she wants.

11. Elevated Doggy Style

Elevated Doggy Style

How
: Depending on what you consider Doggy Style to be, this version has the woman raised to her knees with her hands placed in front of her. It's another great position for deep penetration and hard thrusting.

Taking Elevated Doggy Style to the next level

If she draws her legs together, lowers her head, and puts her body onto her thighs, it's known as the Child's Pose in yoga and as a sex position. In yoga, it's designed to stretch the spine, and for sex, it opens up and relaxes the anal muscles. If your partner enjoys anal and finds it easier to climax that way, this is a great option for open-access anal sex.

12. Corkscrew

Illustration of the Corkscrew Sex Position

How
: The woman lies on her side while you straddle one of her legs before penetrating her. It creates an unusual angle of penetration, hitting parts of the vaginal wall that perhaps aren't used to that angle of contact.

Taking the Corkscrew to the next level

Both partners have both hands free and ample access to her clitoris, breasts, and behind. Experimenting by having her lean over, closer to laying on her back or front, you can work your way through various angles of attack to explore new sensations.

Our best tips to make a woman orgasm

1. Create clear access to the clitoris

The clitoris is protected by the clitoral hood, and for many women, ensuring direct contact without its protection is necessary to obtain maximum sensitivity. While most men may feel uncomfortable discussing sex topics, a conversation before sex and having your partner show you the contact she needs during each sex position could be the difference between her climaxing or not.

2. Talk dirty, roleplay, dress up – feeding her needs before, during, and after sex

Every woman is unique. One of the ways to excite and enhance pleasure during any of our recommended sex positions is to find out what turns your partner on and embrace it. Whether that's talking dirty, sex outdoors or in open spaces, a little bondage, or S&M, it's time to talk about her fantasies and bring them to life for her.

3. Seduce her mind – spend time on foreplay and lovemaking

Much of sex happens in the mind for many women, and they need to feel relaxed to climax. Foreplay can start way before the bedroom, building intimacy throughout the day leading up to your sexual encounter. A few drinks, dinner, compliments, or a sexy massage can all help, and taking your time during foreplay to ensure she's turned on and ready will pay off in dividends.

4. Improve your oral sex game

On the topic of foreplay, oral sex is an excellent way to relax your partner and build sensation and connection. Who doesn't love being the full focus of their partner while receiving oral sex?

5. Keep an eye on her body language

A woman will let you know how she feels by her body language. Her movements will guide you to what she wants more of, as will her moans and how much she relaxes and lets go during sex.

A woman will let you know how she feels by her body language.

Paying close attention to how she moves and works her body and where and how she makes contact with your penis and genitals when she's the most turned on will give you all the cues you need to give her more of what she likes.

6. Talk with her about what turns her on

We said it earlier, but we'll say it again: if you want to know what turns her on and makes her climax, ask her. And if she can show you during foreplay or intercourse, even better.

7. Female orgasm often takes more than penetration, so add toys, props, and passion to bolster your chances

Sex toys can add the stamina and sensations you can't get from your penis. Don't consider them as competition; consider them as teammates you can tag in when you need a break or a helping hand.

Use props, like pillows, to change the angle of penetration and internal and external contact.

Lube will add new slippery sensations and reduce anxiety for partners who don't produce enough natural lubrication.

8. Don’t obsess over orgasm, focus on pleasure

Some women never orgasm, and some find it hard to climax, however pleasurable they find sex. Focus on pleasure, connection, relaxing, and engaging your partner, and climax is more likely to come naturally. If it doesn't, you should have both had a great time in the process.

Obsessing over orgasm puts too much pressure on both of you, so relax into it, try to lose your inhibitions, and work on letting the brakes off and getting a little wild.
